Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Cardiff to Norwegian parents and grew-up mostly in England serving in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. His childhood education shaped his later work as an author with school day pranks and mischievousness with friends becoming parts of later stories such as the infamous water jug scene in Matilda!
Many of us will have escaped into magical worlds through Roald’s stories with adventures with tales of unexpected lands and unusual characters. A poll in the office at Warner Planning put Matilda firmly at the top of the list for the favourite book with The BFG and The Twits followed closely behind. Â
Roald went on to achieve tremendous success with his vast collection of stories selling over 300 million books. His creative storytelling captured the imagination of children and adults alike and also spurred a number of very successful films and theatre productions reaching an even wider audience. Â
With technology and devices becoming such a key part of children’s learning it’s really good to remember the benefits that reading can bring from improving cognitive and language development and literacy. Reading is also a great way to expand learning and imagination for all ages.Â
Roald Dahl has created stories based on some of his own experiences as a child and a young adult sprinkled with his unique way of capturing the imagination of the reader. Many of his characters were brave, plucky children using their wits against grown-ups for the greater good. Some important life lessons mixed in with adventures is a perfect recipe for a good book!Â
